It is said that Vlad Dracula besieged and captured the castle although there is no actual proof of this or that he lived there. A good proportion of the castle dates back to before his time. It may be that Bran’s description as Castle Dracula owes more to its setting on a steep mountainside and its spooky appearance which perfectly fits the Hollywood image! In the early part of the 20th century Bran was the home of the Romanian Queen Marie. The castle has a display of furniture and within its grounds an outdoor museum of village life. Close to the entrance is a collection of market stalls offering a variety of products from genuine Romanian handicrafts to tacky Dracula souvenirs.
